We need your Appalachian accent
Reaching the end of the year means coming up with a lot of bold plans for the next year and reflecting on things we’d like to change based on what we’ve learned.
Well, I’ve got plenty of things I’d like to change - including being better about time commitments on things like part 2 of a certain series I’m doing on substack - but I’ll focus more on the plans part.
First, however, I’d like to make a quick ask
We are making a big subscriber push at the end of the year to help us fund Appodlachia next year. We’re hoping to pay a video editor to produce more video content for us as well as many other things. With that in mind, we’re about 50 subscribers away from reaching our goal.
Would you consider supporting us on Patreon, or here on Substack as a paid subscriber, and help us take our show to the next level?
End of ask
Beginning of other ask (but a fun one)
Longtime Appodlachians will recall we put out an episode almost four years ago (yikes, I’m getting old) where we collected over 100 Appalachian accents from people throughout the region and shared them with listeners.
That was pretty damn cool.
It’s safe to say our network/reach has grown SIGNIFICANTLY since then. Like at least 5-10x what it was 4 years ago. So we want to revisit this in a very bold way and try this again.
We’re hoping to collect as many Appalachian accents as we possibly can so we can put them into a compilation video/episode.
In fact, we want to be so bold as to shoot for the stars: our goal is to get at least one accent from ALL 423 COUNTIES IN THE APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION.
Here’s how you can help.
Record a voice memo on your phone with the following script:
“Hi, my name is [FIRST NAME]. I am from [COUNTY NAME OR CITY NAME], [STATE] and this is my Appalachian accent. This is how I say Appalachia.”
Listen to make sure the recording at least sounds good enough to understand, then send it in an email to info@appodlachia.com
Please share this with any and all of your friends from Appalachia - even if they’re from the same area as you. We would love to have as many accents as possible for this project.
We love yall and hope you have a great New Year!

This Appalachian accent collection is one of the cooler things y'all do.
